0 degree elbow, also called “90 bends or 90 elbows”, are manufactured as SR (Short Radius) elbows and LR (Long Radius) elbows.

Long radius elbow refers to the pipe outer diameter with radius of curvature equal to 1.5 times, i.e R = 1.5D. Most elbows are available in short radius or long radius variants. When the two ends differ in size, the fitting is called a reducing elbow or reducer elbow.

‘The long radius elbow is the elbow which the radius of curvature of is 1.5 times the diameter of the pipe; if the radius of curvature is greater than 1.5 times, the long radius elbow will be called the bend. The short radius elbow means that the radius of curvature of the elbow equals the diameter of the pipe, or 1 time the diameter of the pipe in common words.

The long radius is used most commonly, and it is also the default radius. When it is the place with the high pressure or the high flow rate, the long radius elbow is usually used. If the resistance requirements of the solid transmission pipeline are strict, the larger radius elbows will be used.

An elbow is a pipe fitting installed between two lengths of pipe or tubing to allow a change of direction, usually a 180° or 90° angle, though 45° elbows are also made. The ends may be machined for butt welding (SW) or socketed welding(SW) etc.

The surface quality and mechanical properties of the elbow are almost the same as the pipe’s. To facilitate welding, the long radius elbow should be made of the same kind material of the pipe to be connected.

Steel pipe elbow is a key part in a pressure piping system used to change the fluid flow direction. It is used to connect two pipes with same or different nominal diameters, and to make the pipe and thus the fluid direction turn to a certain direction of 45 degree or 90 degree. This change in fluid flow direction adds pressure losses to the system due to impact, friction and re-acceleration.

According to fluid flow direction of the pipes, elbows can be divided into different degrees, such as 45 degree, 90 degree, 180 degree, which are most common elbows. This degree is just an representation of the angle by which the fluid flow is going to change after flowing through the said elbow.

Elbows are split into two groups which define the distance over which the flowing fluid change direction; the center line of one end to the opposite face. This is known as the “Center to Face” distance and is equivalent to the radius through which the elbow is bent.
